Tick & Mosquito Season in Connecticut: What to Expect April–October
If you live in Southington, Cheshire, Watertown, Waterbury, or anywhere else in central Connecticut, you've already noticed it: the warm-weather window when ticks and mosquitoes take over your backyard. At ProSource Pest Solutions, our tick & mosquito season runs April through October — and each month brings something a little different. Here's what to expect, and how a monthly treatment program lines up with the way these pests actually behave.
Why April Through October?
Ticks and mosquitoes are temperature-driven. Once nighttime lows stay consistently above freezing — usually early April in CT — adult ticks become active and mosquitoes begin breeding in standing water. Activity tapers off in mid-to-late October as nights get cold again. Treating any earlier or later isn't cost-effective, and treating just once during the season isn't enough.
Month-by-Month: What's Happening in Your Yard
April — Adult Ticks Emerge
This is when adult deer ticks (the Lyme disease carriers) come out looking for a host. They're already infectious. Your first treatment of the season knocks back the overwintering population before they can multiply.
May — Mosquito Breeding Begins
Standing water from spring rain turns into mosquito nurseries. Tick nymphs — the smaller, harder-to-spot stage that causes most Lyme infections — also become active. May is one of the highest-risk months of the year for tick bites.
June & July — Peak Activity
Mosquito populations explode, especially after storms. Tick nymphs are still active. This is when most clients first call us because their kids and pets are being bitten.
August — Mosquito-Borne Disease Risk Climbs
West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) cases in Connecticut typically peak in August and early September. Staying on schedule matters most here.
September — Adult Ticks Return
A second wave of adult ticks emerges in the fall. They're hungry and looking for hosts before winter.
October — Final Treatment
One last application as activity winds down protects you through the tail end of warm days and helps reduce next year's starting population.
What a Monthly Treatment Actually Does
Our technicians treat the perimeter of your property, mulch beds, shrubs, tree lines, and other areas where ticks and mosquitoes hide and breed. We do not spray your lawn — that would damage the grass and isn't where these pests live. Treatments are once per month, with at least 21 days between visits.
The chemicals we use are EPA-registered and safe for families and pets once they've dried (we recommend staying inside for 20–25 minutes after application). For more on safety, see our guide to safe pest control practices for homes with children.
What If It Rains?
If a storm hits within hours of treatment, call us — we'll come back out. We've also recently rolled out a rain-resistant formulation that binds to surfaces and keeps working through wet weather.
